One killed as police clash with residents in Kisii

One person died and another was injured on Wednesday after police officers clashed with members of the public at Kenyenya area in Kisii County, following the mysterious death of a matatu conductor.

A boda boda operator was shot dead and a police officer is currently nursing injuries from the ensuing fracas.

The matatu conductor was allegedly beaten by police from Kenyenya Police Station when they arrested him while on his way to Magenche area.

He was later taken to Kenyenya sub-county hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Attempts by irate locals to storm the police station were thwarted after more security officers were brought in to contain the situation.

In a statement to newsrooms following the incident, Kisii leaders led by Governor James Ongwae and Senator Sam Ongeri appealed for calm, urging residents to allow investigative agencies to conduct a probe into the matter.
