One on one with American woman who beat the coronavirus

An American woman from Seattle who beat the new coronavirus is one of the many people who have recovered from the COVID-19 infection.

Speaking to Citizen TV’s Waihiga Mwaura on News Night, Elizabeth Schneider said she believes she contracted the virus while attending a house party.

In her very first interview with an African broadcaster, Schneider said she attended a house party on Saturday, February 22.

The party had like 30 to 40 people who hobnobbed in a night of dining, wining and merry making.

Several days later, Schneider says she woke up feeling tired and groggy. She assumed it was her body detoxing from her back to back night-outs the past weekend.

Around midday the same day, she started feeling unwell: she had a fever and felt a little too tired. She also had body aches.

She took the rest of the day off, opting to work from home.

Later that evening, her body temperature had shot up to 39 degrees Celsius.

Schneider says she was not aware that she had contracted the coronavirus and ended up purchasing over the counter medication for her fever.

“It is very interesting, I bought an over the counter drug, its is very similar to Paracetamol like the one you have in your country,” She explained.

The next morning when she woke up. Her temperature was down by two degrees. She stayed home that day nursing her fever.

Several days later, when scrolling through her social media, she saw an update from a friend who had been at the same house party with her.

“My friend who was at the same party with me said she had similar symptoms like I did, 15 other people who were at the party also commented on her update saying they were sick,” she narrated.

On Saturday, March 7, she tested positive for the coronavirus through a team of researchers who were holed in Seattle conducting a study on a number of flu-like infections within the state.

“I took a nasal swab from a kit offered by the researchers, at the time I had largely recovered, when the results came, they told me I had tested positive for coronavirus,” She added.

It is now more than three weeks since she recovered.  She says she no longer has the symptoms she had when she first contracted the infection.

She advises anyone who exhibits symptoms of the coronavirus to stay home for at least 7 days after the onset of the fever.

In her parting shot to Kenyans, Schneider asked everyone not to panic, saying it is possible to beat the infection.

“Stay calm, do not hoard stuff, just be vigilant and stay home if you feel unwell to avoid spreading the virus, otherwise you do not have to worry,”
