One person killed, 7 rescued after Malindi building collapses

One person was killed after a Malindi building collapsed in Barani, Malindi on Friday morning.

Reports indicate that so far, seven people have been rescued as rescue operations continue.

According to the Kenya Red Cross, there may be several others trapped inside.

Officials from the humanitarian organisation and Emergency Plus Medical Services (EMS) are at the scene.

The building is said to have been scheduled for demolition after it was reportedly discovered that construction was done illegally.

In June this year, three people were killed after a five-story building collapsed in Nairobi in the wee hours of the morning.

At the time, authorities told Reuters that 30,000 to 40,000 buildings built without approval were at risk.

In June 2017, two people died after a seven-story block fell down in Pipeline Estate, Nairobi.

49 others were killed the previous year when their building collapsed during a heavy, night-time downpour in Huruma estate within the country’s capital city.
