Only a third of 2015 KCSE candidates qualify to join University

Education Cabinet Secretary Dr. Fred Matiang’i has raised concerns over the low number of Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) candidates who have achieved the cut-off points to join University.

Speaking during the official release of the 2015 KCSE results, Matiang’i said that though this signifies a drop of 0.7 per cent from last year, the numbers are still worrying.

He called on all education stakeholders to work together to improve the education standards in the country saying his ministry is committed in offering the necessary support.

The cabinet secretary further noted that by end of 2017, the government will be providing alternative places for vocational and technical training.

He said already, the government has set aside Sh16 billion to go towards the setting up of technical institutions in the country in line with Vision 2030.

Addressing the issue of exam irregularity, the CS stated that of those involved in the cases, majority of the centres are in Nairobi, Meru and Makueni with Isiolo the only county that had no single case of cheating,

Matiang’i further noted that there will no blanket punishment for schools whose students have been involved in exams cheating saying only the individual students will have their results cancelled.

He added that the Education Ministry will work with Interior Ministry to investigate and take action against those responsible for leakage of last year’s exams.
