Only two things matter to Kenyans online; World Cup and Kanze Dena

It is soccer season, and that means everything else takes a back seat to the World Cup for a whole month, unless you are a star by the name Kanze Dena.

For the better part of June, according to the top trending searches released by Google, Kenyans principally searched for information on the FIFA 2018 World Cup.

But the newly appointed State House Deputy Spokesperson Kanze Dena’s name breaks the monotony of the World Cup which occupies a staggering eight spots in the Top Ten list. The other name on the list, the late Tanzanian Bongo artiste, Sam wa Ukweli.

Kenyans search for information on former Citizen TV anchor Kanze Dena who was appointed to the role as part of an overhaul of the Presidential Strategic Communication Unit put her at number five on the list.

Ms. Dena, also in the same month, gave her first official State House briefing since her promotion to the position and this gave Kenyans content to yap about online as they ranked her debut performance.

Also among the list of top ten Kenyan trending searches was the news of Hata kwetu wapo hitmaker Sam wa Ukweli at number 8 who fell ill while recording music at the studio.

The singer was pronounced dead on arrival at Palestina Hospital in Dar es Salaam.

Top on the list was a search for fixtures for the World Cup which started on June 14, 2018. Kenyans Googled heavily to find information on the groups and results of the completed matches at the preliminary group stages.

The month also saw Kenyans log in to keep track of teams such as Brazil, which occupies a spot among the favourites at every World Cup, with conversations centered on superstar forward Neymar da Silva Junior.

World Cup 2018 continued to dominate the Google search lists in June, with the Portugal vs. Spain match taking seventh place.

Other searches for matches include; Brazil vs Switzerland where Philippe Coutinho and Steven Zuber scored one goal each for Brazil and Switzerland, respectively.

The Nigeria vs Argentina match rallied fans from across the continent who placed their hopes on Nigeria advancing to the next stage.

The Argentina vs Croatia match was also the subject of a number of searches.
