Only yellow buses to carry school children, Education CS says
Education Cabinet Secretary Amina Mohammed now says that any school buses that have not yet been painted yellow will not be allowed to carry students.
“All buses of public and private primary and secondary schools must be painted,” the CS maintained.
She warned public schools against flouting the new regulations that were a directive by her predecessor Fred Matiang’i.
The deadline for repainting of buses was March 31.
Speaking during a visit to St Georges Girls High School in Nairobi, Ms. Mohamed reiterated that the vehicles must also be roadworthy and fitted with seat belts to ensure the safety of students.
The CS further announced that the registration of learners under the National Education Information Management System (NEMIS) will continue despite the lapsing of the Saturday deadline.
For the past few weeks, parents have been stuck in long queues at government offices trying to get birth certificates required for the registration exercise.
According to the Ms. Mohamed, 68per cent and 98 per cent of primary and secondary school students have so far been registered under the new system.
However, only 1,584 learners in Early Childhood Development (ECD) schools have been registered.
