Opiyo Wandayi elected PAC Chair

Ugunja Member of Parliament Opiyo Wandayi has been elected chairman of the parliamentary Public Accounts Committee (PAC).

Mr. Wandayi got 15 votes with his rival, Nambale MP Sakwa Bunyasi, getting three votes.

The lawmaker will be deputised by Kibwezi East MP Jessica Mbalu who was elected as the vice chairperson of the powerful committee.

Wandayi, who takes over from former Rarieda MP Nicholas Gumbo, pledged to strongly defend public interest in his new role.

“Thank you colleague members of the Public Accounts Committee of the National Assembly for honouring me to be your Chairman in the 12th Parliament. We shall jealously safeguard public interest as we execute our constitutional mandate,” he tweeted.

The PAC chair and vice chairperson are elected by the Public Accounts Committee members from among themselves.

The committee is formed immediately after a general election and serves for a period of three years before another one is constituted to serve for the remainder of the parliamentary term.

PAC exercises a watchdog role of examining accounts showing the appropriations of the sum voted by the House to meet the public expenditure as well as other accounts laid before the House as the Committee may think fit.
