Opposition reviving MRC to instill fear, MP claims

Jubilee Party officials in Kwale County have dismissed claims by locals in the coastal region that the Mombasa Republican Council (MRC) is its project, and accused the opposition of spreading rumours of the group’s revival ahead of the August polls.

Kwale County Women Representative Zainab Chizuga said that most of the former MRC members have agreed to register as voters and accused government critics of sponsoring the group to disrupt voting in the area.

“Our opponents especially outsiders are the ones coming [up] with MRC issue to instill fear in locals so that they can avoid voting. It is an opposition project and not a Jubilee project,” she said.

She noted that most of the MRC issues have been addressed by the Jubilee Government through NYS jobs.

Chizuga made the remarks after meeting over 700 members of committees from the polling station level to the county level to strategize on registration of party members and voters ahead of the August General Election.

The MP targets to register over 100,000 Jubilee members, adding that leaders who are ready to work with her are free to do so.

“This will ensure we register enough voters and have enough members in the area because this is no longer a CORD zone but a Jubilee zone,” she added.

Chizuga said she has no choice for a governor, noting that locals will give her their choice.
