Our vehicles are safe, asserts Nakuru governor

Nakuru Governor Kinuthia Mbugua has sought to dispel claims that his county government could lose some of its vehicles since they do not have logbooks.

The governor said by the time the last audit was done, logbooks for the vehicles in question had not processed.

Mbugua called on the people using the 2014’s general auditor report to stage demonstrations and peddle propaganda to stop as the county government can justify audit queries raised by the report, which he is set to do in the Senate.

“Auditors ask questions in their reports and when an issue is satisfactorily explained it is absolved,” he explained.

He added that issues highlighted by the report date back to the period prior to the 2013 General Election before the inception of county governments.

The governor also disputed claims that the administrators he hired were not competent, saying the hiring process was open and fair and that all the eleven sub-county administrators hold masters degrees.

He further urged residents of Nakuru County to make use of the administrative structures of the county government to solve issues and only refer matters beyond those authorities to his office.

This came after Nakuru County Traffic Commandant Joseph Mwangi issued a notice to people who own vehicles to comply with the law by following due process in registering their plates before their vehicles are impounded.

The commandant said traffic officers would soon launch a crackdown on unregistered vehicles, especially those with foreign number plates. He said such vehicles are usually stolen or used to conduct illegal activities such as ferrying drugs.

“Anyone with a car that has an unregistered foreign number plate or is without a logbook should be ready to face the law. We do not want such vehicles to be used for criminal activities in Nakuru or anywhere in the country,” he said.

Mwangi further noted that many of the vehicles are usually from Uganda through Malaba and Busia borders, and a few from Tanzania.
