Outrage after Lawrence Lual Malong Yor Jnr pledges support for Kenya universities body

A video of controversial South Sudan tycoon Lawrence Lual Malong Yor Jnr pledging support for the Kenya Universities Students’ Organisation (KUSO) has drawn the ire of Kenyans online.

In the now viral video, Mr. Yor says he will invest in the organisation because he loves the youth, to cheers from the KUSO officials with one of them even adding that “our new chopper is coming.”

“I will stand with KUSO, and I will invest in KUSO… I will invest a lot of dollars in KUSO. I love youth, I will support youth, and I’m looking forward to the youth to change this country,” says Mr. Yor.

The video has since gained public ridicule on social media with Kenyans on Twitter pouring scorn on the student leaders for cheering on the controversial billionaire.

Below are a few reactions from Kenyans about the video:

When questioned about the source of his wealth in a recent interview with Citizen TV’s Jeff Koinange aired on Sunday, a seemingly cagey Mr. Yor said “I got my wealth from my Lord Jesus Christ.”

My Lord Jesus Christ blessed me; I fly on private jets… I live in Presidential suites… I am blessed,” said the 30-year old.

A recent documentary by award-winning Kenyan investigative journalist John Allan Namu titled ‘The Profiteers’ painted General Paul Malong as among a few powerful people who gained immense wealth from South Sudan’s civil war and stashed them in foreign banks.

The documentary also portrayed Mr. Yor as General Malong’s son, a claim the two have now come out to refute. Mr. Yor further denied claims that he benefited from these alleged proceeds gained by General Malong’ from the civil war.

The tycoon first came to public limelight when he posted a video of himself lying on a bed splattered with $1 million (Ksh.100 million) which he claimed was a donation to charity.
