Over 100 Nairobi residents arrested over stepping on Kidero Grass

Over 100 Nairobi residents have been arrested for allegedly stepping on ‘Kidero Grass’ along Uhuru Highway over the past two days.

Speaking to Hot 96, Nairobi County Government’s head of enforcement, Tom Tinega, said the operation to arrest those littering the city and stepping on grass and lawns along the streets is still on.

Monday, 71 city residents were arrested by the Nairobi County Environment Monitoring and Enforcement Team for littering and stepping on grass and were each fined Sh2,000.

The county government used Sh40 million to beautify the city last month ahead of United States President Barrack Obama’s visit.

Recently, Nairobi Governor Dr. Evans Kidero was on the receiving end after a video of what looks like workers uprooting grass surfaced online.

Kenyans on Twitter had previously been on his case after he launched a grass rehabilitation project aimed at beautifying Nairobi City before the arrival of U.S. President Barack Obama.

They ridiculed the efforts, questioning how the grass would grow in such a short time.

Governor Kidero told off critics of the ‘#KideroGrass’, saying that the grass was not meant for U.S. President Barack Obama’s visit, rather it was a long-term plan to beautify the City.

Kidero also came out to defend accusations of workers uprooting the grass. Through his facebook page, he moved to assure City dwellers that the ‘#KideroGrass’ is safe and is here to stay saying;

‘Please take note that NO ONE is uprooting ‪#‎KideroGrass. The appointed contractor is restoring the ground in order to do the proper planting. #KideroGrass is well on course, the quality of grass selected takes time to grow!’
