Over 200 heads of cattle die in Turkana as drought continues to bite

About 200 heads of cattle have died in Kaeris Village, Turkana County as drought and famine continues to bite in the region.

According to Turkana County’s county executive commissioner (CEC) in charge of disaster management, Charles Lokyoto, the county is gathering reports on the worst affected areas in order to send them aid.

“We have dispatched people to various parts of the county and we will come up with solutions based on that report,” said the CEC.

Speaking to Citizen Digital, the residents said the drought has led to loss of livestock, adding that they are now forced to slaughter donkeys for meat.

“Our goats and sheep are dying every day. And the remaining ones are too thin and are only awaiting death,” said Kevina Ekai, a resident in the county.

Gabriel Logilae, who is also a resident, fears that the effects of the drought may be serious, especially now that children are home for the holidays.

“Our children are back from school and we don’t know what to do. What we have left is to eat is donkey meat,” said Logilae.

The residents are calling on the national government to intervene and offer aid.
