Over 200 students awarded scholarships in Taita Taveta

More than 200 students in Taita Taveta Couny who were unable to pursue their secondary education due to financial constraints, were on Wednesday awarded scholarships.

The students who hail from across the 20 wards within Taita Taveta County, will access the funds this month through the Imarisha Elimu initiative unveiled by Governor Granton Samboja.

Speaking during the issuance of the scholarships, Samboja vowed to work hand in hand with the relevant stakeholders to improve the quality of education in the county.

The move comes amid concern over the low number of pupils who reported to Form One this year in the, even after the government announcing free secondary school education and extending the period for students to report to school.

The most affected region was the Coast with Education stakeholders blaming the low Form One enrolment in the Coast region on poverty and terror attacks.

The government has since announced a door-to-door initiative to ensure students go to school, with parents now being warned against failing to take their children to school.

In Thika, Deputy County Commissioner Tom Anjere has cautioned parents still keeping their children at home that they could be liable for imprisonment.
