Over 2000 IDs yet to be collected in Kericho

Over 2000 identity cards (ID) are yet to be collected from Huduma Centers in Kericho, an official has said.

Speaking to Citizen Digital, Huduma Center Manager in Kericho, Rosemary Awino, appealed to the owners of the uncollected documents to collect them, saying they will need the documents to register as voters ahead of next year’s General Election.

“Since we opened in March this year there has been over 2000 uncollected IDs and certificates of good conduct,” she said.

She stated that the owners of the documents visited the centre in a rush, and wondered why they are yet to collect, adding that most of the documents had been returned for correction or renewal.

ID card issuance has been a bone of contention in the recent past, with sections accusing the government of deliberately delaying the issuance of ID cards in certain areas for political reasons.

Last week, two Members of Parliament from the Turkana community criticised the government over the alleged vetting of the community members before being issued with national Identity Cards.

The MPs castigated the government over allegedly taking to too long to issue members of the community with the ID cards as compared to other communities.

MPs Christopher Nakuleu (Turkana North) and Protus Akunja (Loima) said that the vetting process is against the spirit of the law since the community is not a threat to national security.

The legislators said that failure to acquire the crucial documents, the community risks being locked out of key processes such as employment and participating in the elections.

They further said that the delayed and complicated process of getting the ID and voters cards has also spilt to other areas such as Laikipia and Samburu.
