Over 2000 Murang’a residents get free medical treatment

More than 2000 people in Murang’a and neighboring counties on Saturday received free medical treatment organised by the office of the Murang’a Women Representative.

The event, which was held at Kiria-ini Catholic Church ground in Mathioya Constituency follows the launch of free medical camps by Sabina Wanjiru Chege, in partnership with other officials.

Wanjiru said the exercise focused on supporting the government in delivering healthcare to people who are in the most remote areas.

“The government cannot do much for now that is why am asking the public-private partnership to continue organising such camps frequently in order to provide medical services to residents who do not have access to health services,” said the women representative.

She also urged residents to take charge of their health and go for frequent checkups, adding that people had been diagnosed with hypertension and diabetes.

“We also found various serious cases that we referred to different hospitals which required special medical attention,” she added.

Wanjiru challenged other governors to take health seriously, noting that health centers and dispensaries do not have doctors and medicine.

“Health has proven to be quite a task for the counties to handle,” she remarked.

Lately, the health sector has been marred by lack of medicine and demonstrations by health workers due to poor health facilities and unpaid salaries.

One of the volunteers, Dr Mahabubur Khan, a dentist, said they had received many cases of gum disease and fluorosis and called on the government to arrest the situation before it got out of hand.

He said the problem was common in mountain regions, saying the permanent solution to the problems was to introduce water treatment.

Dr Khan noted that they were ready to partner with the government and give free services so as to improve the quality of life.

Locals who benefited in the exercise praised the medical camp and the county government for taking initiative in ensuring their health was well taken care of.
