Over 300 families displaced by floods in Migori

Over 300 families in West Kanyuor location, Migori County have been displaced by floods that have hit the region in the past four days.

Area chief Mr.Philip Opolo said over 200 families have been displaced in Kakelo-Kakoth sub-location while the other 100 families are from Karapolo sub-location and West Kanyuor sub-location.

He said the water levels have increased following heavy downpour, adding that more families are likely to be displaced in case the rains continue.

The area chief said the majority of the affected families are putting up with relatives while a few who do not have relatives who are on raised grounds are camping at various rescue camps in the area.

Besides displacing families, Mr. Opolo said the floods have also destroyed crops and roads exposing area residents to more problems.

He said the ongoing Migori-Sori road construction has also interfered with the smooth flow of the waters hence making the area to be more flooded.

Meanwhile, the area chief has appealed to those living in flood prone areas to relocate to higher grounds.
