Over 300 farms flooded in Garissa as heavy rains continue

Farmers in Garissa County are counting losses after River Tana burst its banks and flooded about 300 farms located nearby on Saturday.

Speaking to journalists, the farmers said they were unable to access their farms due to the floods.

They lamented that despite floods being rampant in the area, the government has done little to avert the disaster.

According to the farmers, they have incurred losses of up to Sh2.9 billion due to the recurrent floods in the past five years.

They added that the floods adversely affect women, children and the elderly in the area.

Meanwhile, a number of places in Migori County have been rendered impassable as rains continue to pound the area.

Business premises in Nyathike region and Migori Town have been closed down following continuous heavy down pour.

And as the effects of the heavy rains continue to be felt across the country, residents in flood hit areas are now calling upon the national government and to release the money that had been set aside to mitigate the effects of El Nino rains.
