Govt to resettle families evicted by colonial govt

There is finally hope for over 300 families who were evicted from their ancestral land in Mount Kenya after the government promised to resettle them.

The families are believed to have been evicted from the land, which is in Mt. Kenya Forest and therefore under the Kenya Forest Services in conjunction with the Kenya Wildlife Services, by the British white settlers in the 1950s.

Addressing the families’ representatives at Chuka University on Sunday, Lands Cabinet Secretary Prof. Jacob Kaimenyi assured them that they would be resettled on a 24,000-hectares land after consultation with all the relevant stakeholders.

“Considering that the land is in a water catchment area for Tharaka Nithi, Embu and Meru counties, there is the need for all stakeholders to work together and ensure that the families are resettled without interfering with the ecosystem,” said the CS.

He also said that the government is committed to settling all the displaced families as enshrined in the constitution under the Lands Act, in a bid to end all the land injustices not only in the three counties but countrywide.
