Over 4000 Face Starvation in West Pokot

The residents blame the government for its alleged slow response to their situation.

They claim they have not received any relief food despite frequent calls to the government to offer them humanitarian aid.

Over 4,000 people in the arid region lack food due to the prolonged drought that has hit the area.

The shortage is attributed to lack of rainfall and poor seeds that were planted during the planting season which failed to yield produce last year.

This comes as Kenya receives hunger alerts from different parts of the country.

Leaders from West Pokot County led by Leader of Majority in West Pokot County Assembly Simon Kalekem are calling on the government through the Ministry of Devolution to urgently disburse relief food to the affected area.

Kalekem added that the scarcity of food in the region has affected learning in school as school going children engage in absenteeism

Some of the worst hit areas include Pokot North District, Pokot Central and some parts of Kapenguria Constituency.

The government has flagged several trucks ferrying foodstuff heading to hard hit areas.
