Over 50 matatu operators arrested in NTSA crackdown in Garissa

Hundreds of commuters were left stranded on Thursday after traffic police and National Transport and Safety Authority officers conducted a crackdown on PSV vehicles plying Madogo-Garissa route.

During the operation, over 50 vehicles were nabbed on different traffic offenses including lack of inspection certificates and insurances.

The operators of the affected vehicles were arrested and are set to be arraigned to face different charges.

The crackdown caused a transport crisis with commuters being forced to scramble for the few matatus which had complied with the regulations.

However, speaking in his office, Garissa police boss Edward Masibo said they will continue with the crackdown until sanity is restored on the roads.

He said the operation will continue to ensure safety is guaranteed as schools re-open next week.
