Over 70 homes benefit from solar lighting in Kajiado

At least 70 families in Mashuuru area of Ilbissil, Kajiado County have benefitted from solar lanterns from a local organization.

The solar lanterns were supplied by Lighting Manyattas Initiative, an organization that supports the education of Maasai children by supplying alternative lighting systems.

Speaking during the event to supply the lanterns on Saturday, the organisation’s founder Janet Yiamoi said they have distributed about 540 solar lanterns since it was founded in 2013.

“We founded the organization to assist local families who live in manyattas and use kerosene lamps to light their homes get cleaner and cheaper lighting,” she said.

According to Ms Yiamoi, the kerosene lamps used in most manyattas are a source of pollution and pupils find it hard to do their homework at home after it gets dark.

She explained that they distribute the lanterns to one school going child per home and have done so in different villages in Kajiado Central and South constituencies.
