Over 800 Girls Escape Forced FGM In Kuria

The girls ran away from their homes to escape the cut being forced on them by their parents and relatives.

Most of the girls are now living in rescue centres with some claiming that they have received death threats

And in a bid to secure the safety of the girls, Migori County first lady Hellen Obado has donated materials worth Shs 100,000 to cater for them

The donation issued on her behalf by Mary Maisori included sanitary towels, foodstuff and clothings.

During the event, Maisori said that the county government was ready to work closely with leaders in the national government to stop female genital mutilation in the region.

She urged more donors to join hands in the fight against the practice.

Maisori advised the Kuria community to lead in embracing good practises that sell their county.

“We shall be happy to see Kuria lead in education and other good practices that portrays a better image of the county to the outside world”, she said.

Speaking in the same venue, Kuria East OCPD Gladys Ogonda warned that those still encouraging the practice in the area will face the law.

She said that at least 10 people including parents and circumcisers are already in the police custody and are awaiting prosecution in the courts
