Pain, Fire and Death as Gusii Students Riot

One more person died Friday after he was allegedly shot by police in the crossfire, sparking yet another round of angry protests by residents and public service operators in the town.

Eye witnesses say the truck veered off the road, rolled several times, running over two female students who were heading home on the side walk.

Their deaths sparked riots by the students who engaged police in running battles for hours.

The truck which hit the duo was set ablaze by the students, right next to a petrol station despite the danger that it posed to the safety of the students and other passers-by.

Business paralyzed on Kisii-Keroka road

Five other vehicles were set ablaze by the students who vandalised and looted the petrol station as well.

And while the crossfire continued, one matatu driver was shot and killed on Friday.

Journalists were not spared either, after they found themselves caught stark in the middle of the riots, two of them, were injured and are in hospital.

Transport along the Kisii-Keroka road was paralysed all day, businesses shut down, the fear of being caught in the middle of the riots kept many at bay.

By Friday evening, relative calm had returned to the area.
