Pakistani man detained over Nakuru theft

A 32-year-old Pakistani man who pleaded guilty to being in the country illegally, and later charged with stealing and handling stolen items valued at Ksh 800,000, has been remanded in Nakuru.

Gazi is alleged to have broken into a house owned by a Mr GisembeGisere using assorted keys on the nights of December 28 and 29, 2016 at Kabachai Estate in Nakuru town.

He reportedly made away with Ksh 400,000 cash and electronic gadgets valued at Ksh 280,000. He is also accused of stealing three wrist watches worth Ksh 20,000 and other assorted items.

He was further charged with handling stolen property after being found in possession of the devices and Ksh 157,950 cash.

He further faced three additional counts of illegal possession of two Chinese passports and a Kenyan passport.

According to the prosecution, Gazi is termed as a flight risk and has no valid documents for his stay and a danger to the people and should, therefore, be remanded; as his intentions remain unclear since phone calls are mostly to Saudi Arabia and Pakistan, despite his pleas to the court to be granted bond.

Principal Magistrate Bernard Mararo ordered that Gazi be remanded at the Nakuru prison pending the hearing and determination of the case.

The court slated the matter for February 14.
