Panic as KCSE exam delays in Kirinyaga County

The Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education examinations in Baricho, Kirinyaga County were delayed by over four hours after the lock of the container that had the exam papers jammed.

The delay spread panic in the county in the morning as the papers, which were supposed to be collected at 5am for distribution were finally accessed at 8.40am after KNEC officials from Nairobi intervened and opened the container.

Confirming the incident, Kirinyaga County Commissioner Erastus Ekidor, who was accompanied by Kenya Police Commander Joseph Nthenge, said the exam went on well despite the delay.

“There is no problem now. At first, we thought the key was lost, but we later found that the padlock had jammed. But now all schools have received their exam papers and we hope everything will be well,” he said.

Mr Ekidor confirmed that the papers had not been tampered with, adding that they have now replaced the lock with one of their own to avoid such occurrences.

He noted that there was enough security to ensure the papers were not interfered with.

Ndia Constituency has 32 secondary schools.

The Education ministry under the leadership of Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i has implemented strict rules to govern the distribution and administration of national exams this year to avoid cheating.

In the just concluded Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) exams, the ministry was lauded for the administration of the exams, which was said to have been largely free of cheating incidences.

Speaking when he lunched this year’s KCSE exams two weeks ago, the CS exuded confidence that unlike in the 2015 examination, this year’s exercise will be free of irregularities that have dogged the education sector over the years.

“We have spent so much of our time and resources to ensure that nothing goes wrong. We have gone back and forth on our planning and trained most of our officers,” he said.

Matiang’i reiterated his warning against examination cheating, saying that any incident would be countered ruthlessly.

“We are not going to forgive some of those so-called mistakes. Should there be any effort to cheat or any mistake, it will be met with the ruthlessness it requires,” Matiangi added.
