Pardon officials who return stolen money, Church leader urges Uhuru

Church leaders have called on President Uhuru Kenyatta to consider offering amnesty to government officials who will own up to stealing public funds and are ready to return the money.

Bishop Mark Kariuki, the Head of the Deliverance Churches of Kenya said the amnesty, which he described as being in tandem with Christian teachings, will introduce a new chapter in the war against corruption and boost the president’s resolve to end the vice.

Bishop Kariuki urged the president not to spare any corrupt official after the grace period elapses.

The cleric said President Kenyatta should offer amnesty the same way he did with those who admitted to being in possession of illegal firearms in Northern Kenya.

He added that the move will give room and time to those who have banked stolen money in foreign accounts to return the funds.

He said graft is cancerous and has permeated almost every facet of the society urging Kenyans to support efforts to eradicate graft.

Bishop Kariuki also called on opposition leaders to stop the blame games in the fight against graft, arguing that the war against corruption will only be won if everyone comes on board.

Mr Kariuki made the remarks on Sunday at the Deliverance Church International in Embu during a dedication service and the unveiling of a plaque for the Church’s sanctuary.

The massive state of the art sanctuary with a large sitting capacity has been built over a period of seven years at a cost of Ksh30 million.

On the occasional criticisms of the Government’s Projects and programs, the vocal Bishop took a swipe at sections of the opposition leaders for criticising President Kenyatta just for the sake of it, without offering realistic solutions to their claims.

He said it is high time that the President learned to ignore such criticisms and focus on development.

Bishop Mark Kariuki argued opposition’s tiff with President Kenyatta is meant to distract him from his agenda for the nation.

“Rhetoric and noises for the sake of it should be ignored,” he advised.
