Parents storm school over pregnancies, poor grades

Learning at Kanyodera Primary School in North Kanyamkago Ward, Uriri Sub County was on Wednesday, January 4 paralyzed after parents stormed the school demanding an explanation from the headteacher on why the school’s performance had dipped and cases of pregnancies increased.

The angry parents were seen assembled at the school with teachers keeping off the institution over fear that the parents would lynch them.

The learners were also forced to go back home as the parents did not allow any teacher near the facility.

The School Board of Management Chairman, Dan Odero, said parents were unhappy with the performance of their children over the past three years and that cases of pregnancies were on the rise, a situation they blamed on the teachers.

Mr Odero said the community has tried to engage the school administration on the two issues but the school has not listened to their grievances.

The parents claim that some teachers  are behind 12 cases of pregnancies among the learners reported in the school last year.

Mr Odero noted that the school had a mean score of 141 in the 2016 Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) and only three candidates managed to score over 200 marks.

KNUT executive secretary Migori Branch, Caleb Opondi, has called on the parents to give teachers time so that investigations can be done over poor performance of schools.
