Parents, students protest alleged rape at Moi Girls School

Dozens of protesters who included parents and former students of Moi Girls School held demonstrations on Monday in protest over the alleged rape of a student at the school.

They had vowed not to leave the school compound until they were received all the information on what happened.

“We are not going to leave this place until the police, the school management and the government tell us exactly what happened,” said one of the protesters.

The parents also wanted the immediate arrest of the school principal whom they said tried to cover up the heinous act.

“We are here for picketing, the girl (victim) wrote a statement saying the principal told her to shower and never to talk to anyone, so tunataka huyu principal ashikwe na awekwe ndani (we demand that the principal be arrested and taken to custody),” said a a parent.

Kilimani police chief Michael Muchiri promised the agitated protesters that they will get to the bottom of the matter.

“I implore all of you to calm down and wait for the full report from the detectives. I am a parent and I understand how all of you must be feeling but you should give us time to gather full information and we shall let you know,” said OCPD Muchiri.

Sheikh Yusuf Nasra Buhamza joined the protesters by condemning the incident at the school saying that it is not the first time such a heinous act has happened.

“The school management has always been irresponsible of ensuring safety of our children. It is not the first time, we have reports of girls being ill yet the school does not report to parents,” said Sheikh Yusuf.

All male teaching and non-teaching staff living within Moi Girls School, Nairobi have been ordered to undergo DNA testing as investigations into the rape saga at the institution heats up.
