Parents threaten to withdraw children from school over pollution

Parents in Marereni, Malindi County have threatened to withdraw their children from Marereni Primary School over what they term as the release of heavy dust from a salt harvesting basin constructed by Krystaline Salt LTD, against environmental laws.

Daniel Muma, the school’s headteacher, confirmed that several children were no longer attending school due to health complications caused by the heavy dust from the construction site.

“Every corner of the school has now been covered in dust including a computer lab that was donated by a local NGO,” said Mr. Muma.

Ibrahim Barisa, a parent who had visited the school to pick his child, said that he would only allow his child to attend the school if the construction is stopped.

“The company has disobeyed construction regulations by failing to keep a 200 meter buffer zone that trees where trees are supposed to be grown so that they can control the flow of wind,” he said.

This comes barely a week after the Chairman of the National Land Commission Mohammed Swazuri warned the salt firm company’s based in Malindi that it would revoke their title deeds as they were irregularly acquired.
