Parents To Pay Less As Kaimenyi Releases New Fees Structure

By Musalia Wycliffe

Education Cabinet Secretary Prof. Jacob Kaimenyi issued a new fee structure Friday afternoon to be effected immediately.

The announcement will see public day secondary schools pay a maximum Ksh 9,374 annualy.

It will further see public boarding secondary schools pay a maximum of Ksh 55,553 while special needs secondary schools will pay a maximum of Ksh 37,210 annually.

Kaimenyi directed the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) to take action against schools that will not comply with this directive.

PUBLIC UPROAR

The move by the Cabinet Secretary follows a public uproar over the high school fees rates which has seen many bright and needy students fail to join public schools.

Most public secondary schools charged a maximum of between Ksh 90,000 and Ksh 100,000.

Last month, the Kenya Union of Post Primary Teachers (KUPPET) asked Kaimenyi to release new school fees structures following a delay by the government to implement the Kilemi Mwria led team report.

The task force proposed this year as a target year for implementing free secondary school education.
