Parents want school closed over high pregnancy rate reopened

Parents of Kanyondera Primary School in Migori County have stormed the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) offices in Uriri Sub-County demanding answers regarding the fate of a school that was shut down at the beginning of 2016 due to poor performance and high pregnancy rate among schoolgirls.

The school is yet to reopened for the first term of the 2017 and it is feared that most parents are pondering over transferring their children to neighbouring schools.

Mr Peter Otieno Okongo, a PTA member in the school, cast doubt on a pledge by TSC officials from the county to visit the school Tuesday, January 10 to resolve the matter.

Okongo appealed to Education Cabinet Secretary Fred matiang’i to intervene on the matter, arguing that the county director of education and the TSC officials have shown no intention of reopening the school soon.
