Parents who don’t send children to school to be arrested
Coast Regional Coordinator Nelson Marwa on Friday warned that the government will arrest parents who do not send their children to school.
This is after Acting Education Cabinet Secretary held a meeting with stakeholders over low turnout of form one students at the Coast.
The tough talking official said that they will ensure the Operation Peleka Watoto Shule is a success. This follows reports that the Coast region is the most affected by anemic Secondary School enrollment with more than 70% of students yet to report to school.
“We will work with the children’s department to ensure there is zero truancy,” said Marwa.
Marwa also assured residents that security in all Coast counties has been beefed up.
Speaking to journalists at his office in Mombasa, the tough talking Marwa fired a warning to Al-Shabaab militants that the government will be ruthless when dealing with them.
Marwa was reacting to speculation that Administration Police officers retreated when attacked by the militants at Shakani, Lamu on January 13. He dismissed the speculation as “mere propaganda”.
The regional coordinator further said that the government is committed to ensure that Operation Linda Boni Forest succeeds at all costs.
“These people have resulted to guerrilla tactics. If they are men as they allege to be, let them face our officers face to face and we will finish them because we have secured that region with lethal fire,” said Marwa.
Marwa also stated that security of key facilities in the region including the Mtongwe Ferry, the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) Terminus in Mombasa, The Technical University of Mombasa and the Moi International Airport has been heightened.
Marwa further said that he has instructed the County Commander to ensure that Pwani University security is revised due to evolving security threats.
“If we do not learn from the Garissa University College attack then we are not learners. If anyone threatens the lives of our children we are going to finish them on the spot,” he said.
“We are not contented by the calmness we have at the moment and to that effect I will be making impromptu visits to key installations in all coastal counties without even informing the county commissioner to make sure that people are doing their jobs.”
