Parliament Begins Probe On Police Recruitment

The chairman of the police commission Johnstone Kavuludi told the parliamentary security committee that 437 other complaints raised by the public were dismissed as they lacked adequate evidence.

 

Also present was Inspector General of Police David Kimaiyo who defended the controversial recruitment exercise saying the commission gave priority to regional balance and academic qualification during the exercise.

 

The two were summoned by the Asman Kamama led committee after the National Assembly Deputy Speaker Joyce Laboso ordered that the admission of the recruits to Kiganjo Police Training College until a probe on the recruitment exercise was completed.

 

A multi agency group has been formed to probe the exercise with an assurance from the NPSC chair Johnstone Kavuludi that his commission will deal firmly with those found to have engaged in malpractice.

 

Others set to appear before the committee include are CID Director Ndegwa Muhoro and Ethics and Anti Corruption Commission Chairperson Mumo Matemu.

 

The committee is probing allegations of bribery, nepotism and political interference during the July 14 exercise.

 

The recruitment targeted 10,000 police officers countrywide.

 

6,000 of those recruited were to join the regular police while the remaining 4,000 were to join the administration police

 

The government set aside Ksh 2.9B for the recruitment exercise.
