Parliamentary committees approve President Kenyattas Cabinet nominees

National Assembly vetting committees have approved President Uhuru Kenyatta’s Cabinet nominees announced in the re-organization of the government last month.

The 11 committees that vetted the nominees for positions of Cabinet Secretaries, Permanent Secretaries and Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) commissioners forwarded their approvals to National Assembly on Wednesday which will now deliberate on their suitability.

If the National Assembly approves them, the names will be forwarded to the President for ratification. If the names are rejected, the President will be forced to make fresh nominations for the positions.

The announcement was made by National Assembly Majority Leader Aden Duale on Wednesday after the completion of the compilation of reports on the vetting process held last week.

The nominees, who now await approval by Members of Parliament, are Mwangi Kiunjuri (Devolution) Charles Keter (Energy and Petroleum), Dr. Cleopha Mailu (Health), Joseph Mucheru (ICT), Willy Bett (Agriculture), Sicily Kariuki (Public Service, Youth and Gender) and Dan Kazungu (Mining).

The approval comes after the Director of Public Prosecution Keriako Tobiko cleared Devolution CS nominee Mwangi Kiunjuri of allegations of incitement to violence.

In a pronouncement made on Monday, Tobiko sought to withdraw the case before Chief Magistrate Daniel Ogembo after the Director of Criminal Investigations Ndegwa Muhoro said it will be a challenge to trace witnesses after 15 years.

Kiunjuri had denied that on January 23rd, 2000 at Rumuruti Primary School in Laikipia County, he uttered words that could incite the public to violence.
