Passengers escape death after floods sweep away bus in Turkana

18 people have escaped death after a passenger bus got stuck as the driver tried to cross a flooded seasonal River Lagga at Kalimorok in Turkana County.

In a statement, National Disaster Management Unit Communications Officer Pius Masai says a multi-agency search and rescue operation, led by area County Commissioner, police, Kenya Red Cross and residents is underway to save the other passengers still stuck in the bus.

Masai says the Eldoret Express bus was heading to Lokichar when it got marooned in water, adding that they are unable to reach the passengers at the moment due to strong currents.

Heavy rains have been pounding several parts of the country, with the Kenya Meteorological Department warning Kenyans to brace for rains that are expected in several parts of the country until tomorrow.
