Passengers stranded as NTSA cracks down on errant drivers

Passengers to the coast, including tourists, were on Wednesday stranded for over 30 minutes on the Nairobi-Mombasa highway after drivers of the vehicles they were travelling in were arrested for various offences.

National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) officials carried out an operation along the highway at Voi to check whether motorists were observing traffic rules and arrested drivers for offences including driving while drunk and lacking proper documentation.

The tourists who were left stranded after their driver was arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol told Citizen Digital that they did not know that their driver was drunk.

They, however, waited for another vehicle from Nairobi to collect them before resuming with their journey.

Speaking to Citizen Digital, NTSA director of safety enforcement and accidents investigation, Lt Col Hared Adan, said fatal accidents that take place during the festive season have decreased due to monitoring of drivers by NTSA officers.

He urged Kenyans to speak up if they notice any irregularity by drivers on the road.
