Patients sent home as Embu health workers go on strike

Patients undergoing treatment at the Embu Level 5 General Hospital were on Tuesday sent home after health workers at the hospital downed their tools citing lack of promotions and poor working conditions.

The patients, both inpatient and outpatient, were stranded at the hospital for hours as they pondered what to do next, with most of them admitting that they could not access medication at the various private hospitals because of limited finances.

One of the patients, Rose Wanjiru, expressed her frustrations saying how she had waited for doctors for hours to attend to her fractured hand.

“I was here at around 6:30 in the morning after travelling from my home in Kibugu and so far nobody has attended to me, despite being in a lot of pain,” she said.

Another elderly patient, Mr John Njue, accused the hospital management of playing games with him, claiming that since Friday last week he has not been attended to.

“I have already used all the money I had and now I cannot afford treatment at any other health facility,” Njue said.

The striking health workers gathered outside the hospital where they had a brief meeting, with their leaders stressing that their grievances must be addressed.

The hospital’s Medical Supervisor Dr Gerald Nderitu confirmed that there was a strike but declined to address the press, directing journalists to Health CEC Pauline Njagi. However our calls and text messages went unanswered.
