Pay us our dues, Taita Taveta contractors tell County

Contractors in Taita Taveta stormed the County Assembly building on Friday demanding for payment of goods and services rendered to the county government.

According to the irate contractors, they had taken the issue up with the county executive, but they were informed that the county legislature was to blame for the delay in their pay.

County Assembly Speaker, Maganga wa Maganga, vehemently refuted claims that the MCAs had stalled the payments. He stated that the house had been passing budgets according to schedule, and there were no pending budgetary allocations.

Maganga speculated that someone was tarnishing the Assembly’s reputation for personal gains.

Echoing his sentiments, MCAs expressed fears that the County Executive was defrauding contractors in the name of the County Assembly.

This is not the first conflict contractors have had with county assemblies. Last week, outworkers and suppliers invaded Embu County Assembly over non-payment of bills amounting to Ksh400 million.

The contractors gave the Embu County Government s one-week ultimatum to pay their debts. Should the county not honour the deadline, the contractors have vowed to conduct mass protests.

Chairman of the Contractors Association, James Kugoca, said that they had not received payment for the last one year. When asked about the delays in payment, the Executive blamed the Assembly saying that budgets had not been passed.

Kugoca stated that they were caught in limbo as the two county bodites traded counter-accusations.

Embu County Assembly Speaker, Kariuki Mate, said that the MCAs will not discuss or even pass the supplementary budget until a case filed at the Embu High Court stopping the construction of a Ksh335 million, Assembly Complex is withdrawn, heard or determined.
