Peace team to walk for 1,500 km from Kwale to Marsabit

A team of campaigners have embarked on a walk from Kwale to Marsabit County to create awareness and preach peace during the August 8 General Election.

The 1,500 kilometres walk was flagged off at the Lunga Lunga border point and will end at the Moyale border point.

Under an initiative dubbed ‘Zero Violence 254’, the walk is organized by Ripples International, a human right lobby group.

The two lead campaigners, Douglous Kinyua and John Baidoo, will walk for an estimated period of three months before ending their journey.

The walk was flagged off by the Lunga Lunga Assistant County Commissioner (ACC), Nicholas Kaito, and Lunga Lunga Officer Commanding Police Division (OCPD), Charles Ouma.

“This is a great initiative and we are happy to support it. I thank the organizers for embarking on this in a monumental year when we are holding elections,” said Mr Kaito.

He urged Kenyans to uphold and avoid all forms of violence noting that such cases are also witnessed in Lunga Lunga.

“The walk will cover 16 counties and will seek to inspire a movement of people committed to the elimination of all forms of violence such as gender violence, sexual violence, and electoral violence among others,” said Mercy Chide, the Executive Director of Ripples International.

She said the awareness targets to reach 15 million people before its completion.

The walk will also popularize the recently passed Act of Parliament on Protection Against Domestic Violence Act.

“It is worth the strain. We want every Kenyan to support us so that we can move forward together as a nation,” said John Baidoo, a lead participant in the walk.
