Pengine waniue mimi, lakini sitarudi nyuma: DP Ruto hints of plans to derail his 2022 ambition

Deputy President William Ruto says that he is aware of a plan to scuttle his 2022 presidential bid, saying that only death can stop him from the quest.

Speaking during the burial of the late Kipyegon Kenei, the second-in-command said that if Kenei’s killers were out to intimidate him, he was more than ready.

“Pengine waniue mimi, lakini sitarudi nyuma, I know there is a plot but I want to tell them that I will not back down, I will not be intimidated,” He said.

At the same time, he accused the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) of waging a political war against him.

He asked the DCI to focus on police work and not politics.

“Nataka kwambia DCI awachane na siasa, focus on police work and getting to the bottom of who killed the officer Kenei,” He said.

Dr.Ruto further claimed that he is  aware that some officers from the DCI were heard saying that he would not be in office come 2022.

Visibly infuriated, he reiterated that he was focused and ready for the parties who were plotting to bring him down.

At the same time, he distanced himself from the Ksh.39B Military equipment scam saying that focus had now shifted to his office while the real masterminds of the scam were roaming free.

“My office has no relations to the Department of Defence (DOD) we do not procure guns at my office, this is a plot to undermine me, no one is focusing on the real culprits, they are now fixated on my office,” He added.

He promised that he would not rest until the people who killed Kenei were brought to book.

“Those who killed Kenei will not find peace, we will find them and those plotting against me, maybe you could kill me but I will not be intimidated,” He said.

The DP also spoke about his last conversation with the late Kenei, saying they had spoken just three days before the officer was found dead at his house.

“Jumatatu hiyo wakati nilifika kwa ofisi, nikaita yule anayesimamia ulinzi katika ofisi ya majengo ya naibu wa rais Bw. Joseph Rop ambaye ni Commissioner wa Police, na nikamuita yule ambaye anasimamia escort katika hiyo ofisi Bw. William Yampoi…wote wawili walikuja kwa ofisi yangu. Nilitaka kujua ni jambo gani ilitendeka Alhamisi iliyopita,” he said.
“Hawa wawili walikuja wakaniambia ilitokea hivi, mpaka wakaniletea CCTV. Mimi nikaita Kenei na wenzake wawili ambaye wanafanya kazi pamoja. Wakasimama mbele yangu pale ofisini,” DP Ruto added.

Dr. Ruto further revealed that he questioned the three officers to explain what had transpired on the day that former Sports CS Rashid Echesa was seen at his office with two foreigners.

“Kenei akaniambia ya kwamba ni kweli, yeye anajuana na Bw. Echesa…alikuwa amepigiwa simu na kuambiwa Echesa na wenzake waliokuja kwa ofisi yangu walikuwa na appointment…ndio akawaruhusu waje katika waiting room,” the DP said.

According to Dr. Ruto, Kenei’s colleagues corroborated what he said and they agreed that since investigations were underway, they would all go to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) to record statements.

The Deputy President said that was the last time he spoke to Sgt. Kenei.

Dr. Ruto said he worked from his Karen office on Tuesday and Wednesday.
