Peter Kenneth responds to reports linking him to Nairobi governorship race

Former Gatanga MP Peter Kenneth has responded to reports that he is eyeing the Nairobi governorship seat in the 2017 General Election.

Speaking to Citizen Digital on Sunday, the 2013 presidential candidate was non-committal on whether or not he would vie for the seat, though obliquely indicating a shift in interest from the presidential to governorship seat.

Mr Kenneth had earlier been linked to the Murang’a governorship seat, with some political pundits anticipating a second shot at the presidency, after a failed bid in 2013.

But asked whether he would vie for Nairobi governor seat, the Kenya National Congress leader stated: “I am consulting widely on all counties whose electorate has asked me to consider.”

The KNC leader however stated that he would not be vying for the presidency in 2017, but would instead support President Uhuru Kenyatta’s re-election bid.

Since losing the 2013 presidential race, Mr Kenneth has kept off the public limelight, only making appearances at some state functions and the funeral of former First Lady Lucy Kibaki in Nyeri.

Should he join the Nairobi governorship race, Kenneth will add to the growing number of aspirants which includes the incumbent Evans Kidero, Nairobi Senator Mike Sonko, Dagoretti South MP Dennis Waweru, former Raila Odinga’s aide Miguna Miguna among others.

Already, Senator Sonko has sent out a statement to media houses welcoming Peter Kenneth to the governorship race and to Jubilee Party.

“I am ready to work with the former Gatanga MP if he joins Jubilee Party and participate in the free and fair Jubilee party nominations,” stated Senator Sonko.
