Peter Ndegwa replaces Bob Collymore as Safaricom CEO

The Safaricom Board of Directors has appointed Mr. Peter Ndegwa as the company’s new Chief Executive Officer to replace Bob Collymore who passed on in July this year.

In a press statement on Thursday, Safaricom Chairman Nicholas Ng’ang’a said Mr. Ndegwa’s appointment takes effect on April 1, 2020.

Peter Ndegwa joins Safaricom from Diageo PLC — a British multinational alcoholic beverages company — where he is the Managing Director of Diageo Continental Europe.

He has spent over 25 years in various roles within the Financial Services and Fast-Moving Consumer Goods (FMCG) sectors in Africa and Europe.

In his current role, Peter oversees the operations of Diageo PLC in 50 countries in Western and Eastern Europe, Russia, Middle East and North Africa region.

He had previously served for seven years as CEO in Guinness Nigeria PLC and Guinness Ghana Breweries PLC.

Peter Ndegwa becomes Safaricom’s third CEO after Bob Collymore and Michael Joseph, who was the company’s first CEO.

After Bob Collymore’s demise in July, Michael Joseph was picked as Safaricom’s interim CEO as the board fast tracked the succession plan.
