Salasya downplays EACC summon, puts blame on Governor Barasa

Mumias East Member of Parliament Peter Salasya has downplayed a summon by the Ethics and Anti-corruption Commission (EACC), which required him to show cause on his public conduct during a funeral on January 12, 2024.

In a letter issued by its CEO Twalib Mbarak on January 16, EACC asked Salasya to appear before the commission on Tuesday, January 23, for an interview and to record a statement on allegations that he assaulted Malaha-Isongo-Makunga Member of County Assembly (MCA) during the said funeral.

Salasya, in a rebuttal to EACC, has since downplayed the summon, arguing that the case is in court, hence should not be handled by the ethics commission.

He has further accused Kakamega Governor Fernandes Barasa of being the cause of his predicament.

“When you are doing a good job they cannot be happy for you. This is politics, have you ever heard one being taken to EACC because of an assault case? I have a case in court and you are taking it there (EACC),” Salasya told a public gathering in Eluche area on Sunday.

“I know the person doing this is this one (Governor Barasa). I want to tell the governor to do his job and let me do mine. I respect you, stop frustrating me. My only problem was KMTC and Mumias Sugar. I have let him be,” the MP further stated.

On the same stage, Navakholo MP Emmanuel Wangwe argued that it was rightful for EACC to summon Salasya since the body is mandated to oversight conduct of public servants.

“EACC is not summoning on corruption, it is on ethics. We must put things to order,” Wangwe argued.

The controversial lawmaker was on January 12 captured in a video physically assaulting MCA Indimuli during the funeral service.

Chaos erupted after the outspoken MP repeatedly implored the MCA to sit down so that he could continue with his address. The latter however failed to comply, prompting the MP to slap him at the glare of cameras.

Following the incident, Salasya was arrested, arraigned in court and released on a Ksh.50,000 bond after he denied charges levelled against him.
