Photos of school girl injured during corporal punishment go viral

A form one student from Nyabururu High School in Kisii County caused a stir on social media after photos showing her covered in bruises went viral.

According to the girl’s father, the girl had allegedly received corporal punishment from a teacher, leading to the injuries.

“Last Sunday my daughter and her classmates were beaten up and she got a serious shoulder injury. When I saw the pictures I was aggrieved,” said Enock Nyanaro, the girl’s father.

Mr Nyanaro camped at the school gate hoping to see his daughter but was not allowed entry into the institution by security gurards manning the gate.

A section of parents have come out to support Mr Nyanaro complaining that the practice was rampant in the school, adding that the cases were extreme.

Mr Nyanaro is now calling on local authorities to investigate claims of corporal punishment in schools even after the country banned the practice in 2001. The aggrieved parent is also threatening to move to court if the matter is not resolved.
