Pilot who assaulted policewoman in Rutos meeting charged

The helicopter pilot caught on camera accosting a police officer has been arraigned in court and charged with assaulting and hurling abuses at police officer Mercy Wandera and causing disturbance on February 21st.

Appearing at the Nyandarua Law Court before Senior Magistrate Martin Mutegi, the pilot, Captain Alistair Patrick Llewelyn, denied the charges.

His bail application was, however, declined after the prosecution argued that it did not have his official documents other than his alien card, therefore, he could be a flight risk and might also interfere with witnesses.

Through his lawyer Stanley Kangai, Llewelyn had requested for bail saying that he does not have his original passport since he submitted it to the England authorities, to apply for a passport for his 3 year old child who is a Kenyan citizen.

He will remain in police custody until Monday next week when a ruling on the bail application will be heard.

The pilot was captured in a video grabbing the policewoman’s stick and insulting her before pushing her at an event attended by Deputy President William Ruto in Nyandarua on Sunday.

Kenyans took to social media to criticise the pilot’s action using the hashtag #DeportRutosPilot.

In a statement, Deputy President William Ruto termed the incident “unacceptable and regrettable.”

Llewelyn surrendered to Kilimani Police Station just hours after Inspector General Joseph Boinnet ordered for his arrest, terming his acts totally unacceptable.
