Poachers arrested in Makueni with elephant tusks

Police in Makueni arrested three suspected poachers in possession of six elephant tusks valued at Ksh.3.5 million.

The three suspects were arrested on Thursday night in a sting operation by under cover officers from the Criminal Investigations Department who posed as buyers.

According to Masimba assistant chief Musyoka Mbinda, two other suspects managed to escape but police have launched a manhunt.

The police and Kenya Wildlife Service have been on an anti-poaching operation for the better part of the year.  During the last operation conducted in Nairobi and Eastern Kenya in April, Kenya Wildlife Service expressed concern on the high rise of poaching.

Uncontrolled poaching has contributed to the depletion of wildlife in the country and greatly threatening years of conservation efforts and animal population.
