Police arrest 10 drunk students in Nyeri

Ten high school students were on Wednesday evening arrested after they were found intoxicated in Nyeri Town.

The students from Teto Secondary School were also found in possession of bhang and miraa while they staggered through Nyeri Town at around 6.45pm.

It is suspected that they purchased the alcohol and drugs from one of the popular joints in the town and neighboring Majengo slums respectively.

Nyeri OCPD Masai Makau condemned the students, bar owners and miraa vendors who sold the drugs to the minors terming their behavior as irresponsible.

The students refused to identify the bar owners and vendors that sold them the drugs, however police have launched investigations to identify them.

This comes barely one day after one student died and another was admitted after consuming methanol from their school’s laboratory in Samburu County.

The 17-year-old girl and the deceased were among a group of eight form four students, including five boys and three girls, from Longewan Secondary School in Samburu Central sub County who drunk methanol, mistaking it for a harmless alcoholic drink.

Rajab Saddam, a doctor at Samburu County Referral hospital in Maralal Town, said the victim is admitted at the hospital in a semi conscious condition with severe abdominal pain she developed after imbibing the drink.

He said the victim is responding to treatment as doctors try their best to save her life.
