Police arrest impostor GSU officer in Migori

Police arrest impostor GSU officer in Migori

Police in Migori have arrested an impostor cop who has been posing as a General Service Unit officer (GSU) attached to the Internal Affairs Police Unit in Nairobi.

The suspect was arrested last week at Migori Police Station, when he had gone to familiarize himself with the officers at the station claiming to be a GSU officer working in Nairobi. He told the Mirogi officers that he was on sick leave.

Migori County Criminal Investigation Office Commander, Benedict Kigen, said he received information from the regular police department about the suspect, Michael Odhiambo after which he ordered for the impostor’s arrest.

Kigen said they traced the suspect to his house, at Police Line Estate, which is less than 2 kilometres from Migori Police Station. Officers recovered police uniforms, handcuffs, among other items.

Kigen said the suspect will be arraigned in court Thursday, to answer to the charges.

This is not the first incident where a ‘fake cop’ has been arrested in the country.

On January 4th 2013, Joshua Waiganjo was arrested after allegedly pretending to be an assistant commissioner of police for five years.

His rouse was discovered after he flew on a police helicopter to investigate the Baragoi Massacre.

Waiganjo was charged with two counts of impersonation and one count of illegally being in possession of police uniforms as well as one count of robbery with violence.

The National Police Service Commission (NPSC) then suspended top Rift Valley cops over the saga.

The then Rift Valley PPO John M’mbijiwe was among those axed. The PPO had been photographed several times with Waiganjo.

However, Waiganjo’s father, Bishop Waiganjo, had maintained that his son was a genuine police officer and had been in active duty with other senior officers.
