Police ask to hold wife of slain principal for 14 more days

Police have asked to hold the wife to slain Kiru Secondary School Principal Solomon Mwangi for a further 14 days to complete their investigations.

The prosecution told a Murang’a court that investigations into the death of the principal last week are still in their early stages and that vital statements are yet to be recorded.

This is after the same court last Monday allowed the prosecution to remand her for seven days as investigations into the case continued.

The prosecution told the court that they intend to record statements from members of staff of Ichachiri Secondary School where the suspect is a principal and that she may jeopardize their investigations if she is released.

Clement Mwangi, a homicide expert from the CID headquarters, further noted that Ms Muthoni is not the only suspect in the murder, adding that they are looking into other suspects who are still at large.

“These suspects must be arrested and our operations may be jeopardized if the suspect is released,” the detective said.

Mr Mwangi noted that even though the suspect’s rights must be respected, it was also vital to ensure the deceased gets justice.

“We request this court to give us more time to conduct thorough and impartial investigations so that we can get justice for the victim,” he added.

Mr Mwangi also told Principal Magistrate Anthony Mwichigi that police have only managed to conduct preliminary investigations into the case.

“As I have stated, we are yet to record statements of some members of staff where she is the principal and she will definitely interfere if released,” he reiterated.

The suspect’s lawyer, Bernard Muriuki, however, contested the application and accused police of conducting their investigations at a slow pace.

Muriuki said the suspect has a right to be released on bond regardless of the offence she is suspected of committing, adding that the grounds presented by the prosecution were not compelling enough to warrant them to hold her longer.

He said the suspect should be allowed time to participate in her husband’s burial and take care of her four children.

Principal Magistrate Antony Mwicigi said the ruling to the application would be given on Tuesday.
