Police boss in court for receiving a bribe

Rumuruti Officer Commanding Station (OCS) was on Friday, November 18 charged at a Nyahururu Court for allegedly receiving a bribe from a suspect.

OCS David Cheruiyot appeared before the Nyahururu Chief Magistrate, JuddithWanjala, on charges of allegedly deceiving and soliciting Ksh 4,000 from a Jackson Lerunkei on October 11, 2016 at RumurutiPolice Station.

According to Lerunkei,  the Ksh 4,000 was to act as an inducement for the OCS to release a water pump that had allegedly been confiscated by the police from his station.

The OCS had supposedly confiscated and stored the water pump in his office and issued strict orders that it should not be released until the payment is made.

This is contrary to Section 39 (3)(a) of the Anti-Corruption and Economic Crimes Act No. 3 of 2003 that states: “A person is guilty of an offence if the person; (a) corruptly receives orsolicits, or corruptly agrees to receive or solicit, a benefit to which this section applies; or (b) corruptly gives oroffers, or corruptly agrees to give or offer, a benefit to which this section applies.”

The officer, however, denied the charges and was released on a cash bail of Ksh 50, 000.

The case will be mentioned on January 10, 2017.
